2018 NTDA Convention reflects market strength

Colorado Springs, CO. A record 765 attendees here for the 28th Annual National Trailer Dealers Association Convention were treated to The Broadmoor’s spectacular vistas, wonderful food and drink, and even some hatchet throwing and a wandering wolf—all before the opening general session.

After that, NTDA members enjoyed the usual mix of presentations that provided insight and inspiration, and of course plenty of opportunities for relaxation and renewed friendships.

Dale Martens, Outgoing Chairman

“This convention is a success in part due to the NTDA’s continuously increasing membership,” said 2017-2018 Board Chairman Dale Martens in his State of the Association address. “Collectively, whether you volunteer, contribute, or engage in association programs and services, you are elevating not only yourself but the trailer industry as a whole.”

He added that NTDA is “strong and growing” and he encouraged members to get involved in the organization and “make a difference.”

Martens also introduced two new board members: Ken Bumgardner, president, Royal Truck & Trailer Sales & Service of Dearborn, MI; and Mark Hall, corporate trailer sales manager, Stoops Freightliner-Quality Trailer Inc of Indianapolis.

As for new products, Martens noted the launch of the NTDA Market Outlook, a publication featuring information about new technology, market data, and analysis. Members this year also participated in compensation and financial performance surveys, each released ahead of the convention, as well as a service department guide.

John Princing, New Chairman

The NTDA scholarship, begun in 1998 and generously supported by sponsors and the annual golf tournament, has awarded more than $152,000. The program received a record number of applications in 2018, with five recipients taking home a total of $11,000.

“It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as your board chairman this year,” Martens said. “The NTDA board and staff are always seeking your input and ideas about new programs and services.”

In presentations covered on the following pages, the NTDA convention also featured:

• FET dos and don’ts;

• year-end tax tips;

• succession planning strategies;

• the trucking industry outlook; and

• a discussion of GHG regulations; 

NTDA will host its 29th Annual Convention at The Breakers in West Palm Beach, FL, Oct. 9–11, 2019.
