Truck sales still up from 2018: Wards

Review truck sales figures from the month of August 2019 for trucks with GVWR over 10,000 lb. Compiled using data supplied by Wards Communications.

August retail truck sales showed some good gains from the previous month—with notable exceptions of slips in Class 6 and Class 8—and trucks continued to post gains compared to last year, according to figures compiled by Wards Intelligence.

Dealers sold 79,036  trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month, up 5% from July. Class 3 registered sales of 32,416, a gain of 16%; 2,262 trucks were sold in Class 4 (+4%); 7,959 in Class 5 (+12%); 5,931 in Class 6 (-14%); 7,012 in Class 7 (+13%); and 23,466 in Class 8 (-7%).

Compared to sales in August 2018, the totals were up 13% with gains across including a 30% improvement in Class 3, the largest populations by class. CLass 8 sales, however, were 2% lower than the year before..

For the first eight months of 2019, medium- and heavy-duty truck sales were up 10% compared with 2018, led by Class 8 and its 19% improvement. All classes posted year-to-date improvement from the same period a year ago.
