Retail sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks sales posted broad gains in October after a September slip, and Class 8 continued to lead the market by racking up huge gains compared to a year ago, according to figures compiled by Wards Intelligence.
Dealers sold 70,997 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month, up 5% from September. By weight, the totals were 25,359 in Class 3 (+3%); 1,791 in Class 4 (+34%), 7,067 in Class 5 (+9%); 5,998 in Class 6 (-2%) for the lone decline; 5,785 in Class 7 (+11%); and 25,007 in Class 8 (+6%).
Compared to sales in October 2017 the totals were up 9%, with Class 8 running 39% ahead of last year and Class 6 up 21%. Class 3, the largest market, posted a decrease from a year ago, down 8%.
For the first 10 months of the year, medium- and heavy-duty truck sales were up 9% compared with 2017, again led by Class 8 and its 33% improvement. And, again, Class 3 (-5%) has posted the only decline in the YTD total.
