May truck sales: Across the board increases for Class 3-8

Retail sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks recovered in May from an April stumble, paced by a big gain in Class 3, according to figures compiled by Wards Intelligence.

Dealers sold 67,006 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month, up 11% from April. By weight, the totals were 27,010 in Class 3 (+19%); 2,214 in Class 4 (+18%), 7,056 in Class 5 (+8%); 6,141 in Class 6 (+3%); 5,390 Class 7 (24%); and 19,195 in Class 8 (+1%). (NOTE: Some April sales figures were adjusted following last month’s publication on TBB.)

Compared to sales in May 2017, the totals were up 10%, with Class 8 running 18% ahead of last year. Class 3 sales are up 2% from a year ago.

For the first five months of the year, medium- and heavy-duty truck sales were up 8% compared with 2017, again led by Class 8’s 32% improvement from a year ago. Only Class 3 (-5%) has posted a decline in the YTD total.
