Felling Trailers recently implemented a weld standard for all its products the Minnesota trailer manufacturer says will enhance its weld quality and efficiency, and reflect American Welding Society (AWS) codes D1.1 and D1.3.
The company said implementing the new standard, in the works for more than a year—from concept, development and approval, to rollout—was “an essential piece” in its production process.
“The weld quality standard gives Felling Trailers team members a better understanding of the quality we build into each one of our trailers,” said weld instructor Ben Myhre.
In developing the new standard, Myhre and Kyle Wald, Felling’s vice president of engineering, received AWS Certified Welding Inspector Certification. With their certified input, Felling began developing the program in 2017, recognizing that a key element of weld quality is qualified personnel trained to the standard.
“Team Members received training that directly relates to their daily job tasks, making it easier for them to identify possible non-conformities before the product reaches the next step of production,” Myhre said.
Once training was completed, there was a three-month implementation period where team members refined and clarified the standard, Felling said. The new standard was fully implemented company-wide Feb 4.
