In a few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread from China’s Wuhan province to every corner of the globe, greatly impacting the world economy and supply chain. Citing “the sudden decline in market demand,” the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is taking the proactive approach to suspend production in at least seven countries in the western hemisphere until at least April 3.
A facility in Peru closed last week and now tire, retread and chemical plants in Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the United States will shutter. Goodyear, which has 47 facilities in 21 countries, will continue to serve customers and monitor inventory and supply levels, while also keep close watch over local conditions affecting its warehouses and distribution centers.
The tire maker also said it is using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and instituted preventative measures to keep employees and inventory safe. This includes “limiting visitor access and business travel, implementing remote working and social distancing practices and increasing frequency of disinfection.”
