Most of the news is underneath the van trailer on this prototype “redefined” reefer shown by Utility Trailer.

The axles are designed for an 83" wheel track so that with standard wheel ends and spindle and zero-offset wheels, the Michelin X One single tires line up flush with the outside wall of the trailer.

The slider box frame was widened from 48" to 54" for greater roll stability. Even the vertical members for the rear impact guard were widened 6".

Weight savings of the single tires and wheels amount to about 90 pounds per wheel end. The trailer is equipped with 20,000-lb Hendrickson HKA-180 Intraax axles having 7/16" wall thickness. In addition to the weight savings, a 5% increase in roll stability is claimed for the prototype van, and the X One tires offer up to 3% greater fuel efficiency.

For easier maintenance, the Michelin tires are equipped with the optional eTire System with in-tire sensors to monitor tire pressure and temperature.

Weight of the Utility 3000R with reefer unit is 13,540 pounds. Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co, P O Box 1299, City of Industry CA 91749.
