Two light-truck engines are among Ward’s Communications’ "Ward’s 10 Best Engines" list for 2003. DaimlerChrysler AG’s all-new reincarnation of the Hemi V-8 and Ford Motor Co.'s 6L Power Stroke turbodiesel are both first-time winners. The Hemi is a 5.7L overhead-valve V-8 that makes 345 hp for its application in Dodge Ram and Ram HD pickups. The Power Stroke turbodiesel, designed and manufactured by International Truck and Engine Corp., is available on Ford F-250 through Ford F-550 Super Duty pickups and chassis cabs. Scoring encompassed the crucial engine characteristics of power, torque, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), technical relevance and basic comparative numbers. All engines nominated and tested were in vehicles with a base MSRP under $52,500.
