Abbott, Langer & Associates Inc has made available a survey of annual pay rates in manufacturing, with information provided by 374 manufacturing firms. The 20th annual Survey of Compensation in Manufacturing is a two-volume, 742-page statistical analysis for 39,000 employees.
The composite highest-income practitioner in this field (salary plus cash bonus and/or cash profit-sharing) is the president "B" of a manufacturing firm (defined as a chief executive officer who has little or no financial interest in the firm). This firm manufactures primary metal products, automotive parts and accessories, or measuring and controlling devices; has more than 1,000 employees; and has total annual revenue of $500 million or more. It is based in or near Nassau/Suffolk Counties NY, Pittsburgh PA, Boston MA, San Jose CA, Houston TX, San Diego CA, Detroit MI, Chicago IL, Nashville TN, or Minneapolis/St Paul MN, or outside the metropolitan areas studied in West Virginia, Illinois, or Wisconsin.
While the median president "B" has a total annual income of $189,532, the highest-income individuals reported in this group make more than $1 million.
At the other end of the income spectrum, assemblers "D" have a median income of $18,803. Earning as low as $11,713, the lowest-paid employees in this group usually are employed by firms that manufacture food, beverage and tobacco products, building materials, computers and allied products, and aerospace and aircraft products. These firms have less than $10 million in total annual revenue and have fewer than 100 employees. They are based in or near Baltimore MD, Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point NC, or Memphis TN, or outside the metropolitan areas studied in Iowa, Nebraska, or Arkansas.
