Schmitz Cargobull has launched a new curtainside semitrailer that it calls “Light & Solid.” The basic version of the lightweight three-axle trailer weighs about 5,700 kg (12,500 lb).

The weight saving was realized mainly by the bolting technology used with a galvanized chassis. Unlike a welded steel chassis, bolting allows manufacture of a steel and aluminum chassis to realize weight reduction. Schmitz uses high quality steel for the long beams and lightweight aluminum cross beams. The steel I-beams and the outer frame are galvanized prior to being bolted on, thus providing excellent protection against corrosion and making them resistant to stone chipping and other mechanical stresses.
