Stewart & Stevenson Services Inc has been selected by Saulsbury Fire Rescue Inc, a subsidiary of Federal Signal Corp, to produce five-ton truck platforms for firefighting. Saulsbury will add firefighting equipment to Stewart & Stevenson's FMTV chassis, and the trucks will be used for off-road brush firefighting in south Texas. The contract is valued at about $500,000, and deliveries are anticipated to begin late-spring 2002.

The FMTV chassis was chosen because it has the payload capacity for the firefighting apparatus and has a track record of off-road mobility and reliability with the military in the more than 15,000 trucks already produced by Stewart & Stevenson.

The FMTV, which includes 2.5- and five-ton trucks in more than 14 variants, is produced in Stewart & Stevenson facilities 50 miles west of Houston in Sealy TX.
