Medium and heavy truck sales were down 28% in June and down 12% over the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 36,410 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, down from June 2007 (47,376) and down from May 2008 (38,365).

Compared with June 2007, Class 8 trucks were up 9%-the only class to show a gain. Class 7 experienced a 20% decline.

Through the first six months of 2008, truck dealers sold 233,693 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, down 16% from the corresponding period of 2007.

Sales of light-duty trucks (GVW ratings of 10,000 pounds or less) were even weaker in June versus a year ago, with Class 4 down 45% and Class 3 down 44%. For the year, total sales were down 18%.
