Medium and heavy truck sales were down 25% in August compared to the same period a year ago but up 1% over the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications

Medium and heavy truck sales were down 25% in August compared to the same period a year ago but up 1% over the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 33,578 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, down from August 2007 (44,997) and slightly up from July 2008 (33,188).
Compared with August 2007, Class 8 trucks were up 9%—the only class to show a gain. Class 6 and 7 experienced a 45% decline.
Through the first eight months of 2008, truck dealers sold 300,459 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, down 20% from the corresponding period of 2007.

Sales of light-duty trucks (GVW ratings of 10,000 pounds or less) were even weaker in August versus a year ago, with Class 3 down 29% and Class 2 down 26%. For the year, total sales were down 20%.
