Medium and heavy truck sales were up 19% in July over the same period a year ago and down 5% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 46,718 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from July 2011 (39,308) and down from June 2012 (49,142).

Compared with July 2011, Class 8 trucks were up 27% (16,421, compared to 12,885). Class 7 sales were 4,101, up 20% from the 3,431sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 608,960 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up19% from 584,536 in 2011. Class 8 sales have been 115,667, a 36% increase from the same period last year (84,953). Class 7 sales have been up 18% (28,076, compared to 23,845). Total sales of all classes have been up 4%, from 3,877,861 to 4,289,059.

Every class has been up, except for Class 4 (down 16%). The biggest increase has been in Class 8, followed by Class 5 (29%).
