Isuzu has begun selling the new F-Series medium-duty commercial truck for the 2004 model year. Underneath, the Isuzu 6HK1 7.8-liter engine offers multiple horsepower and torque options with a single engine. Frame design refinements allow the F-Series to accept a wide range of truck bodies.
This truck's cab, chassis design, and engine are the result of Isuzu's partnership with GM, designed to make tilt cab benefits available from a medium-duty manufacturer.
Additional key F-Series features include: standard Allison transmissions, improved brake systems, 19.5" and 22.5" wheels and tires, new 14,600-lb-capacity front axle (up to 16,000-lb-capacity in January 2004), cruise control, and optional traction control.
The F-Series is powered by the Isuzu 6HK1 7.8-liter diesel engine, with a range of horsepower and torque configurations. The Isuzu 6HK1 7.8-liter can be delivered in several horsepower ratings, from 200 to 250 bhp (275- to 300-horsepower versions will be released in early 2004). The engine can also be slotted to deliver multiple torque outputs, from 520 to 800 ft-lb.
This engine provides a B10 rating of 410,000 miles, which means 90% of the engines are projected to operate nearly 500,000 miles without requiring a major overhaul.
The F-Series addresses GVWs from 24,350 to 37,600 pounds with single rear axles and up to 56,000 pounds with the debut of a tandem axle model in January 2004.
Cab to axle length options start at 96" and go up to 228". The standard frame is rated at 80,000 psi, with an 110,000-psi heat-treated frame offered. Both frames can be equipped with “L” reinforcements.
This truck offers an easy to maintain tilt-cab design. A single operator or technician can tilt the cab forward to reveal the entire engine compartment.
The F-Series is best suited to specific applications including congested areas or where ultimate visibility and control over vehicles is required; for example, road sweepers and paint stripers. In city operation, benefits include shorter overall length, while body lengths up to 32 feet can be accommodated. The F-Series is built in Flint MI.
