Cummins Westport Inc, a joint venture of Cummins Inc of Columbus IN and Westport Innovations Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, has won its first order for natural gas bus engines in China outside of Beijing.

The order from the Xining Transit Co is for ten B5.9-23OG low-emissions natural gas engines to be installed in double-decker buses. The buses will be manufactured by Ankai Chassis of Hefei, Anhui Province, and the Nanjing Jinling Double Decker Factory of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. The engines were to have been delivered in November 2002, and the buses will be delivered early in 2003.

The city of Xining is in the northwestern province of Qinghai and currently runs a fleet of 800 buses, most of which are powered by engines converted from running on gasoline to run on natural gas. The B5.9G engines on order will be installed in new buses to replace older ones in the fleet that are being retired.
