ArvinMeritor, Inc. and Meritor Wabco Vehicle Control Systems have announced the availability of a premium medium-duty brake package that pairs Meritor Wabco's Hydraulic Power Brake (HPB) hydraulic actuation and anti-lock braking system (ABS) with the Meritor Quadraulic hydraulic disc brake.
Combining these brake system offers "unparalleled stopping and performance capabilities," the integrated systems supplier said. Fleet managers will also benefit from longer lining life and fewer aftermarket parts, while drivers benefit from a pedal 'feel' similar to that of a passenger car, ArvinMeritor added.
Separately, Meritor Wabco Vehicle Control Systems announced its new Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system for tractor-trailers based on its existing E-version ABS. It builds upon two company's Roll Stability Control system that is currently operating on over 10,000 commercial vehicles in North America.
"This new system provides another level of vehicle control by sensing the vehicle's tendency to rotate and automatically applying the brakes to reduce risk," said Denny Sandberg, president & gm-Meritor Wabco Vehicle Control Systems.
ArvinMeritor is continuing to conduct field test studies to meet the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) upcoming shortened stopping distance requirements. The agency is expected to release an advance notification on this regulatory change early this summer.
ArvinMeritor said it will offer a number of foundation brake packages to meet the upcoming requirements, including all-wheel air disc brakes, front air disc brakes with rear brake drums, all-wheel high-performance drum brakes, and all-wheel hydraulic brakes.
