International to Lay Off 400

International Truck and Engine Corp plans to lay off 400 workers at its Springfield OH plant, beginning Nov 19, 2001, according to the company. Employees expected to lose their jobs include union, nonunion, and salaried workers. Some may be granted early retirement. One assembly line is scheduled to be idled for a week, beginning November 5. The layoffs were prompted by a 30% decline in medium-duty truck sales.
