Great American Trucking Show Scheduled for September 2001 Dates for the Great American Trucking Show (GATS 2001) are September 6-8. The third annual exposition will be held again at the Dallas (TX) Convention Center.

This industry showcase will include seminars, an Internet Technology Center, free concerts, exhibitor giveaways, the Pride & Polish truck beauty contest, and appearances by athletes and country music celebrities. In 2000, more than 46,000 owner-operators, drivers, fleet owners, dealers, distributors, and other buyers attended, with more than 700 companies exhibiting. Participants came from 37 nations and all 50 states.

Used Truck Association Offers Training Courses The Used Truck Association (UTA) has increased its schedule of training courses for 2001. Three courses are being presented at various locations:

- Deal Winning Used Truck Selling Skills - teaches techniques necessary for increasing sales and selling at higher profits. This course is being offered March 8-9 in Raleigh-Durham NC and July 19-20 in Kansas City MO. Tuition is $295 for UTA members; $395 for nonmembers. Course materials are $25.

- Fundamentals of Used Truck Sales - provides training in the basics of used-truck sales. It will be held May 9-12 in Indianapolis IN and Sept 5-8 in Dallas TX. Tuition is $545 for UTA members; $645 for nonmembers. Course materials are $65.

- Professional Used Truck Management - assists used-truck professionals in designing and implementing effective organizational structure, policies, and procedures for enhanced profitability. Training is scheduled for Jan 24-26 in Orlando FL and Nov 14-16 in Atlanta GA. Tuition is $525 for UTA members; $625 for nonmembers. Course materials are $25.

Participants who successfully complete program requirements for any of the three courses receive a certificate of completion from the UTA. Westec 2001 APEX Expected to Draw 33,000 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Westec Advanced Productivity Exposition (APEX), a metalworking and manufacturing exposition, is planned for March 26-29, 2001, at the Los Angeles (CA) Convention Center. So far, 764 machine tool builders, regional distributors, and other exhibitors have reserved more than 333,800 net square feet of exhibit space. Exhibits will represent some 2,500 international product lines, and 33,000 manufacturing professionals are expected to attend.

New for Westec 2001 are the Rapid Prototyping and Design Pavilion and the International Pavilion. The Rapid Prototyping and Design Pavilion (located in South Hall) will highlight the entire design-to-prototype-to-part-manufacturing process, and the International Pavilion (located in West Hall) will highlight new exhibitors featuring machinery and equipment from around the world. The annual Job Shop Pavilion will return to Kentia Hall (lower level of South Building) to provide contract manufacturing services from nearly 100 job shop companies offering cost-effective design and manufacturing of parts, components, and subassemblies made of metal, plastic, and rubber.

Show hours are: South and West Halls will open at 9 am and close at 6 pm March 26-28 (close at 4 pm March 29), and Kentia Hall will open and close one hour earlier each day.

SME Provides Two Training Courses Online The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is offering two online courses for the manufacturing and engineering community, "Lean Manufacturing Fundamentals" and "Planning Manufacturing Cells Fundamentals." The Michigan Virtual University is a co-sponsor.

"Lean Manufacturing Fundamentals" identifies the best practices for understanding and implementing different portions of lean manufacturing in an organization. This course offers these topics of study: Introduction to Lean Manufacturing, Key Elements in Lean, Predictable Processes, Flow, Material Management, Performance Metrics, Target an Application, Five-Phase Approach, Evaluating Success, and Kaizen.

"Planning Manufacturing Cells Fundamentals" highlights basics of planning and implementing a simple or small manufacturing cell and presents the three fundamentals of cell planning: parts, process, and coupling.
