Hybrid propulsion technology is getting a real-world test, courtesy of the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, which is now putting into operation the first of 11 hybrid buses built by Advanced Vehicle Systems and UQM Technology.
The 11 bus deal, valued at $5 million, involves a 35-foot hybrid electric bus designed to seat 31 passengers and has 19 stand-only positions.
It has a top speed of over 55 miles per hour, can be operated on diesel, CNG, LNG or LPG fuels and has an operating range of over 250 miles on a full tank (depending upon fuel type). Power is also derived from the buses electric battery system, helping to cut back on fuel use and to reduce vehicle emissions.
