Power Stroke Diesel engine will lend muscle to Ford Super Duty pickups, Excursion SUVs

The new 6.0-liter Power Stroke Diesel engine, being introduced for Ford Super Duty pickup trucks and Excursion SUVs by International Truck and Engine Corp, produces 325 horsepower and 550 foot-pounds of torque when combined with Ford's new five-speed Torqshift automatic transmission. The engine provides up to 10% better fuel economy and 20% lower exhaust emissions and a quieter ride.

This V-8 engine is a direct-injection, 32-valve diesel with a new cast-iron block and cylinder heads. It offers powerplant innovations from International and Ford Motor Co, including:

  • EVRT electronically controlled turbocharger

This system employs a set of vanes that automatically adjust to optimize airflow within the turbo, so it acts like a small turbo for instant response at low speeds, and works like a large turbo when more airflow is needed at full power.

  • Tow-haul mode

Once activated, this transmission mode increases a driver's feeling of control when towing large loads up and down steep grades and automatically controls shifts and maximizes available torque.

  • Hydraulic rail fuel injection

The new G2 fuel injection system combines high injection pressure with digital electronic control for better response. Along with four valves per cylinder, this boosts performance and fuel economy while lowering emissions, due to more complete mixing of fuel and air.

  • Cooled Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR)

Cooled exhaust gases are recirculated back into the combustion chamber, lowering the burning temperature of combustion, and as a result, reducing nitrogen oxides.

  • Ease of maintenance

The oil filter is on top of the engine for easy removal. An oil cartridge similar in concept to a printer cartridge keeps oil self-contained during a filter change and the engine free of dripping oil during routine maintenance.

International will continue to produce its 7.3-liter Ford Power Stroke Diesel engine for use in Ford Econoline cargo and passenger vans in America and for export to Mexico and Australia. The engine was recently upgraded to produce 525 ft-lb of torque at 1600 rpm on automatic transmission-equipped models. The powertrain is rated at 250 hp with an automatic transmission and 275 hp with a manual transmission.

Consistency is robotic press brake's forte

Finn-Power International Inc's new robotic press brakes provide unmanned bending at maximum speed, quicker setups and changeover times, and produce consistent parts.

Models are available for 55-176 tons and working lengths of 8-13 feet. By combining the press brake with a robot, Finn-Power can form large or small parts with various profiles. Accurate positioning for bending is achieved using sensors for both back gauge fingers. The Finn-Power robot is independent from the press brake and has weight capacity of 143 pounds. An additional seventh servo axis increases versatility.

The Finn-Power press brakes have a rigid, non-binding ram guiding system. By fastening the piston shaft to the top beam through spherical surfaces, the effect of horizontal loads during the working stroke has been eliminated. The 28" back gauge is bolted directly to the bottom of the machine bed and with use of linear bearings and precision-ground ball screws, offers accuracy. Brush table front support arms are attached to the front of the bed for adjustment vertically and horizontally.

The B-Series also provides an easy station to perform programming and machine setup. During programming, the operator can select and edit the bending sequence if desired. Programming can also be done using tonnage or positioning.
