The American Welding Society (AWS) has published a new edition of the standard governing structural welds used to manufacture self-propelled earthmoving, construction, and agricultural equipment.

This new fifth edition, AWS D14.3/D14.3M:2005, Specification for Welding, Earthmoving, Construction, and Agricultural Equipment, emphasizes workmanship and welder qualification. It contains illustrations of prequalified complete and partial penetration welded joints (butt, corner, T-, or combination) for shielded metal arc, submerged arc, gas metal arc, and flux cored arc welding. Also included are variables for prequalified fillet welds.

Other changes and improvements include:

  • Updated welding suitability tables.

  • A different carbon equivalent (CE) formula and revised recommendations for heat input limitations.

  • Addition of metal core GMAW consumables.

  • Revisions to preheat requirements.

  • Revised recommendations for storage of consumables and control of H2 levels.
