September machine tool consumption in the United States totaled $175.79 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association, and AMT — The Association for Manufacturing Technology.
This total, as reported by companies participating in the United States Machine Tool Consumption program, surged 24.8% from August but lost 9.7% from the total of $194.63 million reported for September 2002. With a year-to-date total of $1,389.71 million, 2003 has sunk 16.1% compared with the same period in 2002.
Consumption is also reported for these five US regions:

Northeast — September machine tool consumption stood at $24.96 million, a 9.2% drop from August's $27.50 million and a 39.2% decline versus the total for September 2002. With a year-to-date total of $188.26 million, 2003 is 22.3% below the total in 2002 at the same time.

Southern — Rising to $28.32 million, September machine tool consumption climbed 24.7% compared with August's $22.71 million and inched up 1.6% versus September 2002. At $300.05 million, the year-to-date total is 8.9% ahead of the comparable figure a year ago.

Midwestern — September machine tool consumption totaled $77.05 million, 68.0% higher than August's $45.85 million, and 28.3% ahead of the total for September 2002. With a year-to-date total of $534.70 million, 2003 decreased 16.2% compared with the same period in 2002.

Central — At $28.64 million, September machine tool consumption rose 13.5% from the $25.24 million tallied in August, but fell 38.5% versus September 2002. The year-to-date total of $227.88 million was off 26.7% compared with the same period in 2002.

Western — Machine tool consumption in September stood at $16.80 million, a 13.8% loss compared with August's $19.50 million and a 11.9% drop versus September 2002. At $138.83 million, year-to-date 2003 has retreated 26.4% from the comparable figure for 2002.
