Schmitz Cargobull delivers Germany's first registered hydrogen truck

Jan. 14, 2023
Manufactured at the Schmitz Cargobull production plant in Lithuania, the body is equipped with a multifunctional floor, two load-securing rails and a tail lift.

Schmitz Cargobull has delivered the first climate-neutral vehicle combination of M.KO box body and hydrogen-powered Hyundai chassis to its customer,  Hylane. The vehicle is the first series-produced hydrogen truck to be registered in Germany.

Under Hylane’s sustainable mobility model, fleet owners can deploy vehicles in their operations through a rental agreement. Further, customers will only pay for the miles actually driven; Hylane plans to cover maintenance or downtime costs. Through this pay-per-use approach, Hylane expects to minimize the risk for customers while accelerating the rate at which zero-emission vehicles replace diesel.

Manufactured at the Schmitz Cargobull production plant in Lithuania, the body is equipped with a multifunctional floor, two load-securing rails, and a tail lift, completing the Hyundai hydrogen-powered vehicle. Assembly of the vehicle and the DEKRA inspection of it took place at the GRW plant in Toddin, where Schmitz Cargobull's project production is also still based. This development makes Schmitz Cargobull the first certified bodybuilder for Hyundai in Germany.

"Solutions for sustainable freight transport are particularly important to Schmitz Cargobull. We are pleased to realize this great pilot project in such a short time and will complete a total of 17 vehicles in the next few weeks,” said Sabine Essmann, international key account manager, logistic/food business at Schmitz Cargobull. “The box bodies from Schmitz Cargobull are optimally equipped to accommodate the hydrogen tanks on the bulkhead.”
