The giga-liner of the Dutch trailer producer D-TEC is still being permitted in Germany, although that nation definitely opposed the use of giant trucks, the so-called Longer and Heavier Vehicle Combinations (LHVs) beginning in October 2007. Contrail International Inc is being allowed to finish tests on the giga-liners of D-TEC.
According to German government figures, giga-liners with a total length of 25.25 meters and 60 tons of allowable gross weight are not safe enough. In the Netherlands, however, the way is free for giga-liners. Due to its technology, the double combination produced by D-TEC meets the German standards and can turn in the German turning circle.
In Germany, the future of the giga-liners is still not sure. “According to recent reports, the permission for giga-liners is legally seen possible in every federal state of Germany,” said Jan van Velthuizen of D-TEC. “We are waiting for further developments.“
