Retail sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks dipped 3% in November compared to October, but the total was 17% higher than in November 2016 as the heavy-duty segment continues to rebound, according to figures compiled by WardsAuto.
Dealers sold 61,411 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month, with losses posted across the board, with a single exception: Class 3 (-6%), 4 (-2%), 5 (-8%), 7 (-7%), and 8 (-2%) each posted a decline from the month before, while Class 6 (+5%) and showed the only improvement.
Still, truck sales are running better this year they did in 2016. For the first 11 months, medium- and heavy-duty truck sales were up 5% compared with the same period last year. Despite a 29% increase compared to November 2016, Class 8 still has some catching up to do—down 4% for the year and the only weight class to trail last year’s total. The slower heavy-duty market is being made up for by solid gains posted by Class 3 (+9%), 4 (+31%), and 5 (+10%) trucks so far in 2017.
