Retail sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks rose 3% in October compared to September, with the total 12% higher than in October 2016 as the heavy-duty segment continues to rebound, according to figures compiled by WardsAuto.
Dealers sold 64,152 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month, with mixed results across the weight classes: Classes 4 (-8%) and 5 (-7%) posted declines from the month before, while Classes 3 (+6%), 6 (+11%), 7 (+7%), and 8 (+1%) showed improvement.
For the first 10 months of 2017, medium- and heavy-duty truck sales were up 4% compared with the same period last year. Despite a 30% increase compared to October 2016, Class 8 still has some catching up to do—down 7% for the year—while Class 7 sales have finally broken even. The slower heavy-duty market is being made up for by solid gains posted by Class 3 (+9%), 4 (+31%), and 5 (+9%) trucks so far in 2017.
