Thermal Dynamics unveils new air plasma cutting system

Thermal Dynamics, an ESAB brand, recently made available its upgraded Cutmaster 58 handheld air plasma cutting system.

The Cutmaster 58, a reintroduction of the Cutmaster 52, now includes the SL60 QD 1Torch as a standard feature, the company said.

The power-to-weight ratio of the 60-amp, 43-pound unit is designed for fabricators, general and mobile contractors, farmers, maintenance and repair personnel, and truck/autobody shops. It can pierce 5/8-inch mild steel, stainless or aluminum metal, and has a maximum sever capacity of 1-1/4 in.

“The Cutmaster 58 features a classic design known for reliable operation in rugged conditions,” said Kris Scherm, ESAB’s global manual plasma business and product director. “The Cutmaster 58 now comes standard with the SL60 QD 1Torch. QD stands for quick disconnect, which enables selective replacement of either the torch handle or cable, saving money if one becomes damaged and needs replacement.”

The classic design of the Cutmaster 58 features several elements, including:

  • A tubular “roll bar” that protects the front and rear of the power supply and makes the unit easy to carry
  • Color-coded LEDs on the front panel that indicate gas pressure status and setup errors
  • On/Off switch located on the front panel
  • Accepts 1- or 3-phase, 208- to 480-volt primary power, offering location flexibility

The Cutmaster 58 also offers a purge mode for clearing the gas line and setting gas pressure, as well as three process modes: standard cutting mode, trigger latch mode, which allows the operator to release the trigger to prevent hand fatigue during longer cuts, and expanded metal mode, which instantly reignites the pilot arc while cutting expanded metals such as grates and chain link fences.

“The Cutmaster 58 offers excellent gouging performance,” Scherm said. “For gouging, set the control knob to the expanded metal mode. If the cutting arc extinguishes as a result of excessive torch manipulation, it will instantly reignite the arc.”

The Cutmaster 58 is covered by ESAB’s 100% satisfaction guarantee, which provides purchase protection any time within the first 100 days of purchase, the company said. The unit includes an four-year warranty on the power supply and one-year warranty on the torch.
