While no one device can completely stop cargo theft, Powerbrace Corporation of Kenosha WI offers several practical and relatively inexpensive methods to secure cargo and deter theft.

Powerbrace's Security Plus theft-deterrent plates move the seal or lock point from the hasp to the bottom of the doors. Once a lock is attached through these plates, it is protected from bolt cutters and hacksaws. The plates use existing guide plate bolt holes. No additional holes, which might allow water intrusion into the door panels, are required. Fewer holes and fewer fasteners mean streamlined manufacturing. Security Plus plates fit lockrods that are spaced at the standard 11-3/8 inches. They may also be custom-spaced to meet customer-specified lockrod centers or mounted as stand-alone units anywhere on the door.

The Powerbrace Secura-Cam/Secura-Keeper assembly allows the cargo seal to be inserted directly at the cam and keeper instead of the lockrod handle. Holes in the cam and keeper line up when the lockrod is in the closed position. When the seal is attached through the cam and keeper, the door is impossible to open without the seal being broken. Secura-Cams accept barrier and integrity seals.

Powerbrace interior theft-deterrent plates are ribbed, making them stiffer and lighter than conventional non-ribbed plates for added strength and security. They bolt on for easy installation and are galvanized to resist corrosion. An interior plate is mounted on the inside of a van road-side swing door, adding another layer of security since the road-side door can't be opened without opening the curb-side door first.

Any one of these devices can help deter theft, but when used in combination, they present thieves with a security system that makes breaking in virtually impossible to disguise.

Trailer manufacturers can improve the quality of their product without drastically increasing its price. Wabash National of Lafayette IN installs Powerbrace theft deterrents as an original equipment option. Fleets purchasing from Wabash often have theft-deterrent devices installed on their trailers as original equipment. The devices also can be retrofitted.

As the FBI commits more resources to the problem, in time they may infiltrate and break up the cartels. But in the meantime, fleet operators and truckers can take their own proactive steps to protect cargo by employing low-cost, efficient theft deterrents.
