Truck sales take New Year's tumble

Retail sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks in January couldn’t keep up with the surge that closed out 2017, but the total still was substantially higher than January's last year, according to figures compiled by Wards Intelligence.

Dealers sold 51,057 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 10,000 pounds last month (-34% from December), with month-to-month losses—some very large—posted across the board, with the exception of2% bump in Class 6: Class 3 was down 40%, Class 4 down 49%, Class 5 down 38%, Class 7 down 16%), and Class 8 was down 35%. The overall truck total would’ve shown an even greater improvement, but Class 3—the largest in sales volume—registered a 5% decline on 20,353 units sold.
