Solent adds gensets to Krone Box Liners for ‘cool’ flexibility

Krone recently delivered its first sliding bogie Box Liner container carriers with an underslung genset for powering refrigerated shipping containers.

Solent Transport Services recently added underslung gensets for powering refrigerated shipping containers to two Krone sliding bogie Box Liner container carriers.

Solent, based in the port city of Southampton, England, added 10 Box Liners to its container carrier fleet this year, Krone said, the latest two of which the company fitted with the on-board auxiliary power.

Krone’s Box Liners are designed to carry 20-, 30-, 40- and 45-foot containers, two boxes at once or any standard-sized tank. Quick-release twist locks also help ensure fast and easy handling, the company claimed.

“We specialize in container transport throughout the UK to all major ports, so it’s important to use only the most flexible equipment, which will enable us to achieve maximum utilization and a fast return on investment,” said Mike Lewry, managing director for Solent. “These Box Liners are perfect in all respects and easier to operate than other skeletal trailers.

“No question, that adds up to faster turn-round times and greater efficiency all-round.”

Genmark, which makes the UM5 genset for Krone’s Box Liner, describes its genset as “the most sustainable genset on the market.” It’s designed to keep weight low while maintaining performance. It weighs 1,036 pounds and uses a fuel-efficient .6-gallon low-noise engine, which consumes .58 gallons of diesel per hour at an average output of 380 volts/50 hertz.

While running at only 70 a-weighted decibels, the genset can handle a 3x1-phase circuit with varying loads, Krone said, as well as 3-phase loads at the same time. A 460-volt/60-hertz option also is available.

“Our steady growth, since early 2013, has been underpinned by the maxim: ‘If it goes in a container, we carry it.’” Lewry said. “That said, each customer’s requirements are individually catered for, and with these genset-equipped Box Liners we have even more flexibility to offer.”

The trailers also come with a 10-year anti-corrosion warranty Krone says is made possible by its high-tech surface treatment process, which includes chassis shot-blasting, KTL electro static dipping and a high-grade powder-coat paint finish.

“Appearance is everything,” Lewry said. “And it’s good to know that these Box Liners will go the distance—both from an image and low-maintenance standpoint. Overall, this is a higher-quality container carrier and like-for-like, a far superior product.”
