Medium and Heavy Truck Sales Down 6% in May

Medium and heavy truck sales were down 6% in May over the same period a year ago and down 2% from the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 58,222 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, down from May 2015 (62,131) and April 2016 (59,511).

Compared with May 2015, Class 8 trucks were down 19% (17,312, compared to 21,501). Class 7 sales were 4,501, up 10% from 4,101.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 284,415 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 1% from 281,203 in 2015. Class 8 sales have been 85,804, a 12% decrease from the same period last year (97,819). Class 7 sales have been up 10% (23,097, compared to 21,002).

Total sales of all classes have been up 8%, from 4,007,727 to 4,330,020.

Every class has been up, except for Class 8. The biggest increase has been in Class 6 (24%).
