Retail sales of medium and heavy trucks increased 4% in May, according to figures compiled by Ward’s Auto Group, a division of Penton Media.
For the month, dealers sold 53,704 trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings in excess of 10,000 pounds, up 4% from April and a 4% gain as well as from May 2012. Class 6 sales were especially strong, up 24% from May 2012. Class 8 trucks (GVW ratings above 33,000 pounds) were down 14%.
Through the first five month of 2013, customers bought 237,943 medium and heavy trucks, up 3% from the corresponding period of 2012.
Including light trucks (GVW ratings below 10,000 pounds), dealers sold 760,857 trucks in May, up 10% from a year ago.
