Medium and heavy truck sales were up 19% in September over the same period a year ago and up 2% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.
Dealers sold 32,162 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from September 2009 (26,914) and from August 2010 (31,554).
Compared with September 2009, Class 8 trucks were up 21% (9,402, compared to 7,769). Class 7 sales were 3,262, down 5% from the 3,428 sold.
For the year, truck dealers have sold 270,665 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 23% from 219,406 in 2009. Class 8 sales have been 77,082, a 17% increase from the same period last year (65,880). Class 7 sales have been down 4% (27,595, compared to 28,749). Total sales of all classes have been up 18%, from 3,795,746 to 4,462,381.
Every class has been up, except for Class 7 (down 4%) and Class 4 (down 31%). The biggest increase has been in Class 3 (46%).
