Medium and Heavy Truck Sales Up 28% in December, 6% for 2013

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 28% in December over the same period a year ago and up 6% for 2013.

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 28% in December over the same period a year ago and up 6% for 2013, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 61,852 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from December 2012 (56,286). For the year, sales were 605,508, up from 569,200 in 2012.

Compared with December 2012, Class 8 trucks were up 9% (19,695, compared to 18,130). Class 7 sales were 4,272, up 10% from the 3,898.

For the year, Class 8 sales were 184,784, a 5% decrease from last year (194,715). That was the only class that experienced a decline. Class 7 sales were up 1% (47,524, compared to 46,854).

Total sales of all classes were up 10%, from 7,544,036 to 8,298,102.

Every class other than Class 8 was up. The biggest increase was in Class 4 (26%, from 9,431 to 11,909), followed by Class 6 (19%, from 39,978 to 47,475).
