Volvo Trucks North America Inc has announced a strategic alliance making Cummins Inc the truck maker's sole external engine supplier in North America.

Volvo trucks sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be available only with Cummins or Volvo engines, effective with 2002-model-year vehicles. Engines for Volvo trucks will range from 250 to 600 horsepower, with displacements from seven to 15 liters. Volvo will supply seven- to 12-liter engine models; Cummins will supply its ISM, N14, ISX, and Signature models. Volvo also said it will increase the range of Cummins engines available in the Volvo VN Series, Volvo VHD , and Xpeditor models with the release of the ISL by October 2002.

Volvo dealers and Cummins distributors will coordinate distribution and support strategies to service Cummins engines in Volvo trucks. Petro: Lube facilities will offer maintenance and light repairs. The Cummins Customer Assistance Center will cooperate with Volvo Action Service to provide 24-hour technical support in three languages.
