Two new trucks – a new medium-duty model and a Class 7-8 heavy-duty vocational unit – are being added to Peterbilt Motors Co.’s lineup.
The new Peterbilt Model 337 is considered the new flagship of the company’s medium-duty line of trucks; a model designed specifically with the P&D, beverage and food service vocations in mind
The Model 337 comes equipped with an all-new ergonomically designed driver display package that can be upgraded with an optional GPS system for navigating difficult urban environments. Power windows, mirrors and lock switches are located on the truck’s new door pad design and a new HVAC system not only improves air flow, but also reduces maintenance costs.
The new medium-duty truck also features an overall increase of 17% side window visibility and improved forward visibility provides an advantage for drivers operating in congested urban environments, noted Landon Sproull, Peterbilt’s chief engineer, and the all-aluminum cab improves fuel efficiency and corrosion resistance.
“Medium duty vehicles are typically operated in congested environments,” Sproull added. “It is important for sightlines, both in the ergonomic layout of the instrumentation or the exterior view of the vehicle’s surroundings, to be clear and allow the driver to make good operational decisions.”
Two proprietary diesel engines – the Paccar PX-6 and PX-8 – are available for the Model 337, along with a diesel-electric hybrid configuration if so desired by customers.
Peterbilt is also rolling out a new vocational unit-- the Class 7-8 Model 348. It has a GVWR beginning at 35,000 lbs. and optional capacity ratings to suit almost any specialty vocation, said the OEM.
Again, an all-new interior accompanies this new truck, designed to enhance the vehicle’s durability, reliability and value through a unique “in-mold” color process that imbeds the color permanently into the dash material to virtually eliminate peeling, scratches, scuffs and fading that can occur in harsh operating environments.
Additionally, the ergonomically designed driver display package features backlit gauges that are easy to read and simple to understand and includes key vehicle performance data located at the top of the dash for optimal viewing.
The Model 348 comes with an all-aluminum cab and is available in truck or tractor configurations and offers critical vocational options such as FEPTO, REPTO and application specific transmissions including a hybrid configuration designed for utility service. The truck is available with a PX-6 engine. delivering 280 hp, and a PX-8 engine, offering 240 to 380 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque for heavier loads. In diesel-electric hybrid configurations, the PX-6 is used, Peterbilt noted.
The Model 348 is available exclusively with air brakes for heavy duty configurations and a wide range of suspension and vocational options in both single and tandem axle configurations, the OEM added.
