Medium and heavy truck sales were up 9% in January over the same period a year ago and down 27% from the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 40,993 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from January 2012 (37,764) and down from December 2012 (56,286).

Compared with January 2012, Class 8 trucks were down 7% (13,158, compared to 14,119). Class 7 sales were 3,780, up 6% from the 3,568 sold.

With the exception of Class 8, every class was up in January. The biggest increases were in Class 4 (44%) and Class 6 (31%).

Total truck sales in January were 542,145, a 14% increase over January 2012 (476,964).
