Medium and heavy truck sales were up 44% in August over the same period a year ago and down 8% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 31,554 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from August 2009 (21,956) and down from July 2010 (34,175).

Compared with August 2009, Class 8 trucks were up 24% (8,834, compared to 7,151). Class 7 sales were 3,031, up 2% from the 2,981 sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 238,503 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 24% from 192,492 in 2009. Class 8 sales have been 67,680, a 16% increase from the same period last year (58,111). Class 7 sales have been down 4% (24,333, compared to 25,321). Total sales of all classes have been up 15%, from 3,433,521 to 3,951,652.

Every class has been up, except for Class 7 and Class 4 (down 28%). The biggest increase has been in Class 3 (47%).
