Medium and heavy truck sales were up 3% in October over the same period a year ago and up 5% from the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 47,683 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from October 2011 (46,328) and down from September 2012 (45,385).

Compared with October 2011, Class 8 trucks were down 11% (15,560, compared to 17,424). Class 7 sales were 3,901, up 10% from the 3,545 sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 467,150 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 16% from 402,661 in 2010. Class 8 sales have been 162,215, a 22% increase from the same period last year (133,399). Class 7 sales have been up 15% (39,432, compared to 34,395). Total sales of all classes have been up 9%, from 5,657,095 to 6,177,293.

Every class has been up, except for Class 4 (down 11%) and Class 6 (down 4%). The biggest increase has been in Class 5 (29%).
