Freightliner gets production boost

DaimlerChrysler (DC) said its Commercial Vehicle Division is adding over 3,000 jobs to Portland, OR-based Freightliner through 2004.

The Wall Street Journal Online reported that the automotive giant’s American-based commercial vehicle arm has taken the lion’s share of the division’s manufacturing jobs, as another 1,000 jobs are going elsewhere.

DC’s NAFTA trucks business unit, which includes Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses saw year-over-year sales increase by 31% to 76,800 units in the first half of 2004. Freightliner maintained its market leadership with a 36% share on heavy-duty trucks, the OEM said.

Worldwide CV sales totaled 310,700 units in the first half of the year.
