Wabash National has submitted its new rear impact guard for SSAB’s 2017 Swedish Steel Prize competition and has been selected as one of the four finalists for the coveted prize out of 102 applications from 32 countries around the world.

Wabash National’s new rear impact guard for trucks and semi-trailers exceeds North American standards for demanding off-set impact. The optimized design using high-strength structural steel has been verified through extensive full-scale testing that shows superior performance in protecting passengers in the colliding car. The patented system provides excellent energy absorption, minimum damage to the heavy vehicle as well as highly cost-effective manufacturing and assembly.

Large truck underride crashes is a topic of concern for the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and HLDI (Highway Loss Data Institute) and the basis for the development of this new rear impact guard by Wabash National.

Swedish Steel Prize is the only international award for engineers in the steel industry attracting companies from around the world. For nearly 20 years, Swedish Steel Prize has recognized and rewarded innovative products, methods and processes using high strength steel that have made a significant impact on the industry.
