East Mfg celebrates 50 years with anniversary trailer packages

East Manufacturing is celebrating 50 years of making aluminum trailers and truck bodies with special 50th Anniversary trailer packages.

The flatbed, drop deck, dump and refuse trailer packages include gold East nameplates and anniversary-logo mud flaps, and flatbed and drop-deck packages also boast gold anodized flat-hook tie downs.

East Manufacturing opened in 1968 on an eastern Ohio site – where it remains today – that originally was a dairy farm. According to owner Howard Booher, the East name was “short and sweet.”

“We had tremendous road construction on the new interstate system that was centered in the area,” Booher said. “It was the ideal location.”

Booher was born and raised on a farm but his hands-on experience as an aluminum welder sparked a dream of building a better trailer with aluminum. East reacquired its first dump trailer, welded by Booher and manufactured for Tom Sheilds, the company’s first customer, in 2008 after 40 years of service.

East started with several variations of the aluminum dump trailer, including a truck dump body in 1970, designed its first sludge pusher trailer in 1978 and first refuse transfer pusher in 1980.

Production of the industry’s first aluminum flatbed trailer was going strong by 1982, and the first walking floor refuse transfer trailer debuted in 1983. The first drop deck emerged in 1990, and the MMX flatbed followed the Beast in 2002.

East eventually became synonymous with its smooth-sided Genesis wall design in the dump and construction industry after it debuted in 2001. Many dump and refuse trailers now boast the stronger, more aerodynamic sidewalls, which are easier to clean and don’t show dents from the inside.

In 50 years of doing business, East has expanded 20 times, growing from its initial 7,200-square-foot headquarters to over 110 acres, with 680,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and building space.
