June 16, 2014

Messer Truck Equipment, a multi-generation family company in Westbrook, Maine, has won this year’s Maddy Corson Award presented by the Institute for Family-Owned Business.

Messer received the award at the 2014 Maine Family Business Awards Banquet.  The truck equipment distributor finished first among Maine-based family businesses with fewer than 25 employees.

The Institute for Family-Owned Business recognized the Messer family for operating the company for 115 years over four generations. Messer Truck Equipment also was praised for its business success, the work environment it maintains, and service to the community and the truck equipment industry,

Messer Truck Equipment has spanned four generations.  It was started in 1899 by Walter A Messer, a blacksmith.  As motorized vehicles began replacing horse-drawn wagons, Messer began offering a variety of truck bodies for commercial applications.  Despite the emphasis on trucks, the company retained its original name—W A Messer—until it was renamed Messer Truck Equipment in 2004.

In addition to its founder, the company has been led by John F Messer, his son John P Messer, and, its current president, Jeffrey W. Messer.
